Anata Dhanu artist statement:

‘Gifts of the Ebb Tide

The pieces on display are the result of years of daily walks along the coast between Walmer and Kingsdown and of the collection of different materials that attracted my attention because of their shape, texture or colour.

These ostensibly crude objects, washed up by the tide and corroded by the elements, held a mysterious appeal. All these fragments seemed to share a sense of impermanence, illustrating the effects of Nature and Time on both the natural and the manufactured.

I started taking pleasure in assembling them by balancing various elements to create a structure that stood together In some kind of harmony. None of these structures is secured, emphasizing their vulnerability and the importance of balance. Each section has to be exactly positioned to arrive at this equilibrium.

Although mostly abstract, they evoke past events of a personal or collective nature . They represent nostalgic reminiscences and echoes of current obsessions with ageing and the fragility of life.

I am drawn to Japanese aesthetics and I occasionally use haiku to echo the spirit of my objects.

Over the past year I have worked under the guidance of creative mentor Kati Saqui who has encouraged me to explore different ways of extending my practice (photography and cyanotype to create images based on the original / analysis and spontaneous drawing to prompt philosophical reflection)

It was her idea that I should show my pieces at Open Studios and I am immensely grateful to her for supporting me over the year and for displaying my objects in her home.
